Meanwhile a genuinely good cup brewed at home costs roughly a dollar, milk and all, and the gear to make it lasts years. Tier 1: the $60 starter kit
Everything you need for a cup that beats most cafes, if your taste runs to black coffee or you already own a milk solution.
AeroPress coffee maker
One excellent cup in about 90 seconds, nearly indestructible, and forgiving of beginner technique. The best cost-per-quality brewer made.
Digital kitchen scale (0.1 g)
Scoops lie; grams do not. Any 0.1 gram scale with a timer turns guesswork into a repeatable recipe.

Tier 2: the full home cafe (about $200)
The upgrades that close the gap on your favorite shop: a proper burr grinder is the single biggest jump in cup quality you can buy.
Conical burr grinder
The upgrade that matters most. Fresh-ground beans keep the aromatics that pre-ground loses in days; a burr grinder does it evenly.
Gooseneck kettle
Controlled pour and stable temperature for pour over. Get one with a built-in thermometer or temperature control.
Pour over dripper and filters
A ceramic or plastic cone (Hario V60 style) plus paper filters: the classic clean, bright cup and a nicer ritual than a machine.
Airtight coffee canister
A one-way valve canister keeps a 12 oz bag at its best for the full month you take to drink it.
Tier 3: iced, lattes, and the extras
The add-ons that replace the drinks people actually backslide for: cold brew and milk drinks.
Cold brew pitcher
Overnight cold brew for a fraction of the $6 cafe version; a fridge pitcher with a fine mesh core makes it hands-off.
Milk frother
A $12 handheld frother plus hot milk gets you 90 percent of a cafe latte at home. Electric heat-and-froth models do it in one step.
French press (34 oz)
The multi-cup workhorse for weekends and guests: coarse grind, four minutes, press slowly.
How not to backslide
- Nail the recipe first. Start at a 1:16 ratio and adjust one variable at a time. The calculator does the arithmetic for every brew method.
- Keep beans fresh. Buy 12 oz at a time, roast-dated, stored sealed and dark. Stale beans are the number one reason people go back to the drive-thru.
- Budget deliberate cafe visits. The goal is not zero cafes; it is choosing them. Two intentional visits a week at a shop worth it (our directory lists independents first) still saves four figures a year against a daily habit.
- Replace the ritual, not just the drink. The 3 PM cup is usually about the break, not the caffeine; the afternoon coffee piece is worth a read before you fight it.
